Summary

Once upon a time, there was a small disciple at Hieizan Enryaku-ji in Kyoto. One evening, the monks had nothing to do, so one of them suggested, "How about making some botan rice cakes?" While everyone was making the rice cakes in the kitchen, the little monk pretended to sleep in the corner of the room. He didn’t want to appear as if he was craving the rice cakes. Before long, it seemed the rice cakes were ready. He thought someone would wake him up, and indeed they did. "Hey, boy, wake up!" He felt happy, but he didn’t want them to think he was eager to eat the rice cakes, so he didn’t respond. He decided he wouldn’t answer until they called him again. While continuing to pretend to sleep, another monk said, "Let him sleep. He’s sound asleep." Hearing this, he felt confused but hoped they would wake him up once more. After a while, he could hear everyone eating. He couldn't hold back any longer. He shouted loudly, "Yes!!" Everyone burst out laughing. (From "Uji Shui Monogatari")
