Summary
The Shadow of the Serpent in the Cup
In ancient times, in a small village, an annual festival called the "Cup Festival" was held every winter. During this festival, the villagers would gather, bring special cups, drink together, expel evil spirits, and pray for a bountiful harvest. On the day of that year’s festival, a young man named Takeru noticed a shadow reflected in his special cup.
When Takeru peered into the cup, he clearly saw the figure of a serpent. However, he tried to convince himself that the shadow was just a trick of the light. Yet, there was an old rumor in the village: "Those who see the shadow of a serpent in the cup will be visited by misfortune." Because of this, Takeru remained troubled by the faint shadow.
As the festival progressed, Takeru was consumed by anxiety. While the people around him laughed and enjoyed themselves, he was the only one captivated by that shadow, unable to focus on anything else. Gradually, the villagers began to notice Takeru’s demeanor, and his unease spread among them. "Could something ominous happen?" the whole village fell into suspicion and fear.
Finally, Takeru resolved to consult the shrine priest. The priest spoke kindly to him, saying, "The shadow of the serpent in the cup is a manifestation of what comes from within your heart. The truth depends on your believing heart. Fear breeds fear, and anxiety gives rise to further anxiety. Calm the waves of your heart and believe in a bright future." Takeru found solace in those words, and eventually, the villagers regained their smiles. Freed from anxiety, they once again danced the night away, and the Cup Festival concluded safely. The shadow no longer existed; it was merely a misunderstanding.
