Summary

Even a Demon Can Hide a Buddha Within

Once upon a time, in a certain village, there lived a man feared as a "demon." His name was Onikichi. With his large body, sharp teeth, and a personality that was disliked by all, he was avoided by the villagers. Onikichi lived alone in a mountain near the village, doing no work and always immersing himself in his own world while talking to himself. The villagers had labeled him a villain and would never go near him.

However, in truth, Onikichi had a kinder heart than anyone else. He had lost his mother when he was just a child, and since then, he had been enduring loneliness. Every time he heard the sounds of the village children playing, he would smile with a feeling of envy. One day, he found a small child who was lost in the village square. The child was crying and looking for their mother, and Onikichi, without thinking, reached out his hand.

"Come here, I'll help you."

At first, the small child was frightened, but as they looked at Onikichi's gentle demeanor, they gradually felt reassured. Onikichi took the child's hand and headed toward the village. Along the way, he spoke kind words to the child and shared cheerful stories to ease their fear. When they arrived at the village, Onikichi delivered the child safely to their mother. Although surprised, the villagers saw Onikichi's actions and came to understand his true nature.

Afterward, the villagers began to reevaluate their view of Onikichi little by little. They noticed his kindness and recognized the Buddha-like heart that resided within the demon. The villagers gradually interacted with Onikichi, forgetting that he was a demon, and accepted him as a friend. Thus, Onikichi's lonely life came to an end, and the entire village became united with his kindness, forming a new family together.
