Summary
Once upon a time, there lived a young man in a certain village. He didn't have any particularly remarkable talents and was just a farmer, but one day he decided that he wanted to become a "thief." To hone his skills, he learned various techniques of thievery and gradually became known as a master.
One night, he resolved to sneak into the mansion of a certain nobleman. Many treasures were hidden there, but the security was strict. However, he used his wit, managing to acquire the treasures without making a sound. Bolstered by the success of that night, he continued to carry out bold acts of thievery one after another, becoming a feared figure among many people.
However, his success did not last long. One day, he encountered a boastful merchant and accepted a challenge to showcase his abilities. A competition began between the two to determine "who is the better thief." Although the young man cleverly managed to steal the merchant's treasure, the merchant was also a genius at deception, and in turn, the young man ended up being caught by him.
Ultimately, the young man was captured and came to feel ashamed of what he had done. He realized how dangerous it was to seek meaningless fame and understood that the gains from harming others were only temporary.
The lesson from this story is that "the things gained by deceiving others will ultimately lead to deceiving oneself." It teaches that true value lies in living with others and acting honestly.
