Summary

A Story of Surviving Against All Odds

Once upon a time, there lived a farmer named Kenichi in a village, who had a beautiful field that brought forth a bountiful harvest every year. However, one summer, a severe drought struck the village, and his field withered away. In his despair, Kenichi stopped plowing his field and spent his days drinking sake. His friends worried about him, but he shrugged it off, saying, "I've survived against all odds."

Soon, a new lord appeared in the village and declared severe taxes on the villagers. Kenichi struggled to pay the taxes because his field was barren. However, he tried to ease his suffering by telling himself, "At least my life was spared." Although he was just a farmer, he also operated a small sake shop, and the sales from the sake barely supported his living.

As the drought continued, the other villagers gradually became exhausted as well. One day, at a village meeting, the other villagers asked Kenichi, "What should we do?" Kenichi replied, "I've survived against all odds, so we'll manage somehow," but deep inside, anxiety was growing within him. He had no means to seek help and continued to drown his sorrows in alcohol.

However, one night, while drunk, Kenichi suddenly heard the voices of his former companions singing. It was a song about "working hard and helping each other." From the bottom of his heart, he reaffirmed the meaning of living in this village and resolved to plow his field once again. By standing together with his companions to face the drought, they were able to successfully grow crops and revive the village. Kenichi learned not only the value of having his life spared but also the importance of collaborating with others, thus understanding the true meaning of "surviving against all odds."
