Summary
The story centers on Jonas, a 12-year-old boy living in a strictly regulated community. In this society, emotions and individuality are suppressed, and all decisions are made by the 'Committee.' Citizens are assigned 'roles' and live by rigid rules daily. The world is colorless, emotions are absent, and memories are controlled.
On the annual 'Selection' day, Jonas participates in a ceremony to discover his future role. This selection will choose a special leader, the 'Giver,' and Jonas is a candidate. The Giver holds the community's past memories and plays a crucial role in maintaining societal balance.
As Jonas receives past memories from the Giver, he begins to experience rich emotions and sensations like color, love, pain, and joy. However, these memories are considered dangerous and disruptive to the community. Gradually, Jonas uncovers the hidden truths behind this seemingly perfect society—suppression of emotions and restriction of personal freedoms—and starts to question it.
Eventually, Jonas learns the dark secret of the community—the reality of people's disappearance called 'euthanasia.' Confronted with this truth, Jonas resolves to take action to free himself, his family, and all citizens. With the Giver's help, he regains memories and emotions while executing an escape plan.
During his escape, Jonas rediscovers the beauty of nature and humanity, understanding the true meaning of freedom and happiness. His journey is not only a liberation from a constrained society but also a story of self-discovery and growth. Ultimately, Jonas steps into an unknown future with hope for a new world.
