Summary
As Poor as a Church Mouse
Once upon a time, there was a man named Takeru who lived in a poor village. Every day, Takeru worked hard to cultivate the fields to obtain even a little food, but the village had suffered from a long drought, and there was hardly any harvest. As a result, his home was empty, and he was indeed "as poor as a church mouse."
One day, Takeru found a small dog by the roadside. The dog was thin and was barking with a hoarse voice. Takeru felt very sorry for the dog and decided to share his food with it instead of eating it himself, even though he was hungry. The dog wagged its tail in gratitude and followed Takeru from that point on.
The dog spent each day with Takeru, and gradually, their bond deepened. One night, while Takeru was sleeping, the dog suddenly dashed outside and headed towards the mountain behind the village. The next morning, when Takeru woke up, he saw the dog returning with something in its mouth. It was a piece of rag that the villagers had discarded. The dog looked at Takeru, as if to say, "Use this to start a new life."
Takeru used the rag to make his own water bottle and began to creatively craft the things he needed. He demonstrated surprising talent, and gradually, the people around him started to help Takeru as well. The village began to regain its vitality, and abundant harvests returned. The growing Takeru and the little dog taught the villagers a lesson that "even in difficult situations, a new path can be opened with ingenuity." They showed that even without money or possessions, warmth of heart and bonds could help overcome any trial.
