Summary

'Fahrenheit 451' is a dystopian novel written by Ray Bradbury, depicting a future society where knowledge and personal freedoms are suppressed. The main setting is a city in the United States with strict information control and censorship. In this society, books are forbidden, and firemen are tasked with burning them rather than setting fires.

The protagonist, Montag, used to work passionately as a fireman burning books. However, his routine is gradually shaken by meeting Clarisse, a young and free-spirited woman, and reminiscing about his friend Ben who died in the war. Through conversations with Clarisse, Montag begins to question his occupation and the nature of society.

One day, Montag witnesses a woman trying to burn her own books in her house during a burning operation. She refuses to let go of the books until she dies to protect the knowledge they contain. This event deeply shocks Montag, causing him to contemplate the power and value of books.

Montag meets his former colleague Captain Beatty and an anti-establishment intellectual, Faber, who teach him about the importance of books and free thought. Gradually, he starts to resist the regime, eventually leaving the fire department and joining the 'Men of the Memory,' who preserve and transmit books underground.

In the climax, Montag and his comrades engage in a battle against the regime to protect knowledge and freedom. Ultimately, society is destroyed by a large-scale war, but Montag and his group embark on a path of reconstruction with hope for the future. They resolve to establish a new era, learning from past mistakes to reclaim true freedom and knowledge.

'Fahrenheit 451' sharply portrays the dangers of information control and censorship, emphasizing the importance of individual freedom and knowledge. It prompts deep reflection on the value of freedom and truth in contemporary society.
